It’s the first day of ASHA Convention! Jump out of bed and hit the ground running! Grab some caffeine on your way into the convention and get ready for an Amazing day! Come take a peek at what I am looking forward to on day one of ASHA ’14.
Arrive early, as the opening session is always packed and often fills up well before starting time! Thins years opening session will focus Harry Bellefonte and his work on advocacy and social justice. Read more here.
I’m speaking two times on day one! Whew – That’s one way to get the weekend started! Here’s a sneak peek at my two talks and what I’ll be sharing…
- Session 1115: Camp Confidence: From Zero to Hero
[Thursday 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm]
This talk comes straight from the heart. It started as a Pinterest perfect plan that quickly turned me on my head and sent me searching the hearts of my students. I’ll be sharing the research out about bullying and shame, explaining why it is our jobs to talk about these topics, and how you can create a therapy space that builds self awareness elf confidence and sends them out your doors courageous! I will send you on your way with ideas to implement Monday morning!
- Session 1212: iPad to iPlay 2.0: Teaching Play Through Apps for Preschoolers
[Thursday 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm]
I started the series ‘iPad to iPlay’ last year at ASHA, and received a great response! So, in order to cover more apps, I expanded it into two sessions. This session will be apps for preschoolers and early elementary students. I’ll show you how to take the most popular apps out there and work them into every aspect of your therapy sessions. You will be able to go into work on Monday and use these activities immediately – I’m all about making my talks applicable for you back in the real world!
Searching through the planner is daunting, yet you can find some real hidden gems in there! Here are some that caught my attention, and some tried and true speakers that I look forward to listening to as well! Here are some sessions on my planner, and a few tips for what to look for when selecting sessions!
- Session 1006: Everything the School-Based SLP Needs to Know About Assessing Social Communicative Functioning
[Thursday 10:30 – 12:30 pm]
My clients are all individuals who struggle with social communication and executive functioning. For anyone who works with that population, they now it is very difficult to assess them with standardized tests. The description of this session looks like it could give me some key information on the assessment aspect, as well as help in talking to parents about common core! I’m always looking at descriptions to see if they indicate that the material will be something I’ll be able to implement right away.
- Session 1007: Implementation Science & Social Thinking®: Discovering Evidence in Our Own Backyard
[Thursday 10:30 – 12:30 pm]
I’ve heard the Social Thinking ® team talk many times, so I’m always looking for their new presentations. Looking at the learner outcomes, it seems like this session may have information that I can pass along to my families! The intermediate level means it won’t be giving me the basics and instead be speaking closer to the level that I’m currently at in this topic!
- Session 1052: He’s Just Lazy! Helping Students With High Functioning Autism Meet Common Core State Standards
[Thursday 1:30pm – 2:30pm]
The creative name caught my attention first – a creative name often indicates a creative speaker! Being a phrase I’ve heard all too often about my executive functioning clients (“He’s lazy!”), it also makes me think the speaker really has been in the trenches with my types of clients. The learner outcomes make me stop and think “Yes! I want to know more on this and/or be able to explain this better to clients!”
- Session 1146: Building Resilience Through Social Thinking®
[Thursday 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm]
More Social Thinking ® content – and by a great speaker. Not only is Ryan a great speaker, she is a wonderful person. I’ve had the joy of getting to know her personally and she is just the sweetest. I know she has a heart for this topic, so I know it will be a talk filled with passion. The learner outcomes on this topic are ones that align with my philosophy and passion for my own clients.
Overwhelmed by the planner?
My first step is to go day by day, one session type at a time!
Example: Thursday, 1 hour sessions.
This helps me browse through everything at least once,
and pull out the first round that sticks out to me!
What sessions are you planning to go see on Thursday?
